A devastating stray dog attack nearly cost a 5-year-old girl her leg after severe injuries damaged the major blood vessels supplying blood to her lower limb. Thanks to the timely intervention and expertise of the pediatric cardiovascular team at Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, the child underwent an emergency vascular reconstruction surgery that successfully saved her leg and restored blood circulation.
The young girl was attacked by a pack of stray dogs, suffering multiple bite injuries across her body, including severe damage to her left thigh and leg. During the attack, a major artery supplying blood to the leg was badly torn, placing her at immediate risk of gangrene and possible amputation.
Doctors stated that the child’s condition was extremely critical when she arrived at the hospital. The injury involved severe soft tissue loss, torn blood vessels, and damage to muscles around the leg. A highly time-sensitive vascular surgery was immediately planned to restore blood flow and prevent permanent disability.
The damaged artery was reconstructed using a vascular graft procedure to restore circulation to the affected limb. According to doctors, such surgeries are especially challenging in children due to the smaller size of arteries and the increased risk of infection associated with dog bite wounds.
The surgery was performed under the expertise of Dr. Aseem Ranjan Srivastava, Chief of Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery at Artemis Hospital, who explained that larger portions of muscle tissue and blood vessels had been severely damaged during the attack.
Doctors used a vein graft technique to restore blood supply to the leg and reduce the high risk of gangrene and limb loss.
Medical experts confirmed that the child is now recovering well, and once her wounds heal completely, she is expected to walk again.
Doctors also highlighted the increasing number of stray dog bite incidents being reported across Gurgaon and other parts of India. Children remain among the most vulnerable victims due to their smaller body size and inability to defend themselves during attacks.
